New summary report on the contribution of forests to climate change mitigation
Face the Future published a synthesis report on the contribution of forests to climate change mitigation. The study was commissioned by the REDD+ Business Initiative and Greenchoice. The report concludes that avoiding deforestation offers a large, fast and cost-effective means of reducing emissions. The current high rate of deforestation (mainly in the tropics) is not only responsible for around 10% of the net global carbon emissions, but also reduces also the capacity of the global forests to remove the anthropogenic emissions. This is urgently needed for achieving global climate goals.
This trend can only be reversed by halting deforestation and by afforestation and reforestation. In fact, these are the only Net Emissions Technology’s (NETs) that can be applied at scale at relatively low costs and with, as a bonus, substantial social and environmental co-benefits.
